Breakfast is everything. The beginning, the first thing. It is the mouthful that is the commitment to a new day, a continuing life. - A.A.Gill
BRIEF
The pandemic is dramatically increasing food insecurity and straining an extremely stressed supply. Loss of employment and income continue to increase demand for charitable food delivery and meal offerings. The closure of in-person educational systems affected a main source of nourishing source for school children.
Everyone involved in the food supply chain is interested in advancing the quality of groceries and cooked meals, and increasing the nutritional value of the food for families. This is a shared goal for nonprofit organizations, kitchens, pantries, food banks, distributors, and recipients alike.
How can we empower the parties involved to improve the system and better the nutritional value of stocked and served meals?
THE CHALLENGE
Design a mobile phone app that empowers a specific audience to help improve part of the chain of food collection and distribution. The app must provide a mode of measurement or service to a single or multiple systems. The audience may be a party involved in some way in the supply chain, or a messenger of public service (much like a watchdog monitoring and promoting awareness) around the severity of the insecurity issue of your choosing.
BREAKFAST MATTERS
Once the kick-off was done and we had our challenge, my team and I set off to figure out exactly how we would like to conquer this issue. We took the weekend to brainstorm and brought all of our ideas to the table. We started with a broad idea of how to fix all issues with food insecurities. as we narrowed down the ideas breakfast started to become a focus of work. Research showed how important it was for children to get a healthy and nutritious breakfast and how vital it was for students to excel at school. We decided to focus on this important meal and pushed for how much breakfast matters.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
A Single parent with young children, who struggles to provide 3 meals a day for them due to food insecurity, needs to find opportunities to give them a healthy breakfast regular for optimal academic performance.
IDEATE
Our first idea was to create a whole education, ordering and delivery system for users to use. Where they could learn about the importance of breakfast, Order meals and have it delivered to their door. They could also volunteer to help create the meals for others. We had grandiose ideas and the project started to get out of control. There was so much to do and so little time to do it in. The idea was sound but we would not be able to deliver the experience the users need.
LASER FOCUSED
One week in we had the opportunity to meet with a mentor to show our progress and receive feedback. This was a pivotal moment for our team and the app. After we ran through the flows and artboards our mentor told us we are looking to broad. He then went into how Lyft uses two separate apps, one for drivers and one for passengers. He said we need to be laser focused on one issue and deliver a fulling thought-out and developed idea. This is when we relooked at our flows and focused.
BREAKFAST REALLY DOES MATTER
With the new user flow and the branding all created we set out to develop our prototype. We started with our wireframes to validate the flow would work. after that we went into full design production. With the revised flow we were able to create a extremely robust prototype that looked and felt amazing! We accomplished our task and created something truly needed.
The app would partner with local food banks, farmers and pantries to deliver simple nutritions meals. Each meal can only be made with 3 ingredients, has easy to understand instructions and is so simple parents can teach their children how to make it. Not only can the users get the food they need but they will also learn how to create these simple meals so once they no longer need assistance they can continue to provide healthy meals. Win/win in everyones book!
ADOBE JAM FINALE
We submitted the prototype and we were chose as one of the 10 finalists! My team worked hard on getting our presentation down to the allotted 3 minutes to show off our prototype. My team member Allison Ruiz presented it to everyone and in the end my team was awarded the 1st place title! We won the Adobe Jam!
The laser focused approach paid off. We took the most important issue and created a simple and effective solution. I am so proud of my team and how we all came together to solve this issue!
